2.1.1 Safe to install
MuVis is an open-source application available on macOS and iOS designed for music visualization. It generates real-time graphical displays that are both informative and musically meaningful, using either audio playback from music files or live input from the device's microphone. Real-time music visualization offers an engaging experience, providing users with dynamic visual and auditory stimulation along with educational insights into sound characteristics.
Upon launching MuVis, the initial display resembles the screenshot provided earlier, with audio emanating from a pre-loaded royalty-free track—currently "The Elevator Bossa Nova" from Bensound.com. The visual interface presents a real-time, dynamic graphical representation of the audio being heard.
The top and bottom toolbars contain buttons and sliders that allow customization of the visualization experience. Users can toggle the visibility of these toolbars by triple-tapping the screen.
The bottom left corner features two chevron buttons labeled left and right. Clicking these navigates through the visualizations: the left button shows the previous visualization, while the right advances to the next. Altogether, the app offers twenty-four distinct visualization styles, which can also be cycled through via swipe gestures left or right.
Adjacent to these are two additional chevrons labeled "Options," which provide access to four variations of each visualization algorithm. The specific variation displayed depends on the visualization, and users can cycle through options using swipe up or down gestures.
A centered "Pause" button allows users to halt playback and freeze the current visualization. Clicking it again resumes playback and animation, with the button label toggling accordingly.
An icon resembling a microphone enables switching between pre-recorded music playback and live microphone input. When activated, it stops any current song and starts capturing live audio from the microphone for visualization. Clicking it again reverses this process, restoring song playback.
Another button featuring a "Music List" icon grants access to user-selectable tracks stored in iCloud Drive. Selecting a track begins playback and visualizes its spectral attributes.
A button with a "Waveform" icon and a minus sign applies a spectral enhancement filter passing through a “spectral enhancer” that reduces noise—such as percussive smearing—and emphasizes spectral lines like musical harmonics.
At the right end of the bottom toolbar are two buttons labeled "UserG" (User Guide) and "VisG" (Visualization Guide). These open quick-reference pop-up windows displaying comprehensive documentation for the app.
The top toolbar contains two sliders: one controlling "Visualization Gain" and another for "Visualization Treble Boost." Adjusting these sliders modifies the amplitude and spectral slope of the visualization in real-time.
